US strikes Iran's Larak Island; Iran fires missiles at bases in Jordan

What we know

US Central Command said American forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, on Sunday. CENTCOM spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces "were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz." CENTCOM described the operation as limited and precise, and said Iran created the threat and the US military eliminated it to protect civilian mariners.

It was the first American strike on Iran since 29 July, when CENTCOM said it hit IRGC targets after an attempted attack on US forces in the region. The war between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other began on 28 February.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said the strike killed and wounded soldiers and civilians on the island and promised a response. The IRGC has not issued a consolidated toll. Iran International reported on Monday that Iranian state media had identified two of the dead by name.

The response came the same night. The IRGC said it fired medium-range ballistic missiles at King Hussein and Al Azraq air bases in Jordan, and claimed it had destroyed maintenance infrastructure and aircraft deployment areas. Al Jazeera described both as US military bases in Jordan; the Associated Press reported only that Iran had fired at "U.S. sites in Jordan" without naming them. Jordan's armed forces said air defences intercepted eight missiles that breached the kingdom's airspace at dawn on Monday, and a military spokesperson said all eight were destroyed before they could do any damage. No casualties have been reported at either base.

Hours later the fighting touched a third country, and the two sides' accounts of it do not match. Iran's army said dozens of drones were launched at Al Minhad Air Base, south of Dubai. The United Arab Emirates said only that its forces dealt with a drone detected over Emirati territorial waters approaching from Iran, with no damage, and issued a separate statement rejecting the Iranian claim that Al Minhad had been targeted, calling those reports false. The UAE foreign ministry called the drone a dangerous escalation and "a blatant violation of the UAE's sovereignty, security, and stability."

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran is not looking for war but would never sit still in the face of aggression, and that instability in the region serves no country's interest. Outlets translating the same remarks have rendered them differently, so they appear here in summary rather than in quotation marks.

Oil moved on the news. Brent crude traded at $90.07 a barrel, up 2.2%, at 7:19am Gulf time on Monday, and at $90.53, up 2.8%, later that morning, with West Texas Intermediate at $85.02 and $85.41 at those same two prints. By midday Monday Brent had risen above $91, up more than 3%, with WTI above $86. Daniel Richards, senior economist at Emirates NBD, told The National that further US secondary sanctions on Iran are also expected, "keeping geopolitical risk embedded in energy prices."

The strike lands two days after a milestone in the other direction. On 28 August, CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said US forces had cleared Iranian mines from the strait's international shipping lanes. Gulf News reported that US forces have to date helped about 1,500 commercial vessels transit under coordinated protection, carrying nearly 750 million barrels of crude, with volumes still well below pre-conflict levels. Sunday's stated justification — rockets being readied to put fresh mines back into those lanes — points directly at that claim.

President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated video on Truth Social depicting Kharg Island, Iran's main oil export terminal, being destroyed. Hamid Bovard, head of the National Iranian Oil Company, dismissed it; NPR reported him saying Trump's posts are laughable and that conditions at Kharg are calm.

What is not confirmed

The IRGC has published no number for the dead and wounded at Larak. Its statement says soldiers and civilians were killed and injured; Iran International reported that state media had named two of the dead, but no Iranian official body has issued a consolidated figure.

Whether the launchers were being prepared for mine-laying rests on the American account. IRGC-affiliated media rejected that account, according to Iran International, which quoted a military source calling the US explanation "fantasy and storytelling." No independent verification of what was on the launchers has been published.

The damage in Jordan is disputed on the record. The IRGC claims it destroyed infrastructure and aircraft deployment sites; Jordan's military says all eight missiles were destroyed before doing damage. Neither side has released imagery.

The UAE episode is disputed in scale. Iran's army says dozens of drones were sent at Al Minhad; the UAE says it dealt with a drone over its territorial waters and that Al Minhad was not targeted.

CENTCOM has published no release about Sunday's strike on its public releases page, where the most recent entry is dated 15 August. The American account so far has come through spokesman statements to news organisations rather than a posted release.

No US official has publicly announced a decision to strike Kharg Island. The Truth Social video is a post, not a stated operational plan.

What happens next

Three things are worth watching, and each is narrow enough to check.

First, the shipping lanes. The stated purpose of Sunday's strike was to keep mines out of the Strait of Hormuz two days after CENTCOM said it had finished clearing them. Whether transit volumes hold, and what war-risk insurance does to them, is the practical measure of who is winning that particular argument.

Second, the diplomatic channel. A 60-day US–Iran negotiating window expired on 17 August. Iran said on 26 August that the United States was standing in the way of a deal on the strait, in talks mediated by Oman. Nothing announced since has replaced that framework.

Third, Bishkek. Pezeshkian is in Kyrgyzstan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit running 31 August to 1 September, alongside Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi. India's government said Modi met Pezeshkian on the sidelines on Monday, hours after the exchange of fire. What Iran's partners say there — and what they decline to say — is a live signal about how isolated Tehran is six months into this war.

A fourth thing would settle two of the disputes above: whether CENTCOM posts a formal release with target detail, and whether Jordan, Iran or the UAE publishes imagery.
